George Washington Legacy Foundation Essay Winners Celebrated

By Shawn Eyer
Alexandria, VA – Two standout student writers were front and center during Alexandria’s George Washington Birthday festivities as winners of the 2026 George Washington Legacy Foundation (GWLF) Essay Contest.
Garrett Wagman, an eighth grader at George Washington Middle School, and David DeCosta, a senior at Bishop Ireton High School, were recognized during the city’s annual George Washington Birthday Parade on Saturday, February 14. The celebration continued Monday morning at the Friendship Firehouse Breakfast, where the students were greeted by Alexandria’s Town Crier, “General Washington” (interpreter Brian Hilton), and members of City Council.
This year’s essay theme, Washington’s Role in Uniting the Colonies: America at 250, challenged students to reflect on the leadership and legacy of the nation’s first president. A panel of judges evaluated numerous submissions before selecting the two winners.
Originally open only to seventh- and eighth-graders, the annual contest expanded this year to include high school students. Participants were tasked with crafting original essays between 700 and 1,000 words. Each winner received a $500 prize, and their essays will be published online to help educate the broader community.
“The goal is to inspire students to better understand Washington’s multifaceted relationship with Alexandria,” said GWLF President Shawn Eyer. “This is a unique opportunity for budding historians in our community to showcase their knowledge, analysis abilities, and writing skills.”
The contest is supported by a generous grant from the Alexandria Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie #871.
Founded in 2018, the George Washington Legacy Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to promoting public understanding of George Washington’s life and legacy through educational and civic initiatives.
