Behind the Budget Curtain: How Politics Shape Our Schools

Alexandria, VA – Agenda:Alexandria, the city’s only nonprofit dedicated to exploring local issues from multiple perspectives, will spotlight the complex challenges of public school funding this September.
Just weeks ago, Alexandria schools faced the possibility of losing millions in federal support—a shortfall that was ultimately avoided, at least for this year. Now, the U.S. Department of Education has charged the city with violating Title IX, a dispute with consequences that remain uncertain. At the same time, the state government may shift some public education dollars toward charter schools, which could further tighten local budgets. How should Alexandria’s schools and local leaders respond if that happens?
Public school budgets are constantly under pressure. Costs rise as schools serve more students with special needs and English-language learning requirements. Funding, meanwhile, depends heavily on shifting federal and state priorities and on an often-fragile local economy. The tension is further complicated by the fact that the city government, which raises most of the revenue, and the school board, which controls how it is spent, do not always see eye to eye.
Agenda:Alexandria’s September program will explore how the city government and Alexandria City Public Schools might work together to navigate these realities. Key questions include:
- How should schools balance essential, legally required services with those the community expects but are not mandated?
- If revenues fall short, should the community fill the gap through trade-offs, charitable support, or higher taxes?
- Are there new sources of revenue or public-private partnerships worth exploring?
The discussion will feature perspectives from the City Budget Manager’s office, the Superintendent or a representative, a leader from the Alexandria PTA Council, and an advocate for alternatives to traditional public schooling.
- Date: Tuesday, September 30 (moved from the usual Monday slot due to a joint City Council/School Board meeting)
