Walk to Bust Cancer Postponed Amid Ongoing Federal Government Shutdown

Organizers hoping to re-schedule in November

Alexandria, VA – The National Breast Center Foundation has announced that the 10th Annual Walk to Bust Cancer event, originally scheduled for Sunday, October 19, is being postponed due to the continued federal government shutdown.

With Fort Hunt Park still closed and the National Park Service scheduling system offline, event planners are currently unable to secure a new date. The Walk, a beloved community tradition in its 10th year, was set to honor loved ones, support survivors, and bring residents together in a show of solidarity and hope.

Executive Director Martha Carucci said, “We want to emphasize this event is delayed, not canceled. We had to make this very tough decision based on safety, logistics, and respect for all participants, volunteers, and supporters.”

Once the National Park Service reopens its scheduling platform, efforts will begin immediately to reschedule the Walk—likely in early November. A new date will be announced as soon as it is confirmed.

In the meantime, supporters are encouraged to continue registering, fundraising, and cheering on their teams at walktobustcancer.org. Carucci stressed that while the event is on hold, the mission continues.

“We are so grateful for the community’s compassion, resilience, and commitment to the cause,” said Carucci, noting that the fight against cancer does not pause—even when the schedule does.
