Alexandria Dedicates Street to Robert L. “Bob” Calhoun
City Honors Former Vice Mayor and State Senator through Street Rededication Initiative

ALEXANDRIA, VA — The City of Alexandria has rededicated Calhoun Avenue as Robert L. “Bob” Calhoun Avenue, honoring the legacy and public service of a respected local and state leader.
Robert L. “Bob” Calhoun, a Yale-educated attorney, served the Alexandria community with distinction as a member of City Council, including time as vice mayor. Known for his civility and thoughtful leadership, Calhoun played a key role in shaping transportation policy and was instrumental in helping establish the City’s DASH bus system. He also supported important reforms in child custody law.
Calhoun later represented Alexandria in the Virginia Senate, where he continued to champion regional collaboration and community-focused policymaking throughout his tenure. He became a Living Legend of Alexandria in 2012.
Street Renaming in Alexandria
The rededication is part of Alexandria’s multi-year Street Renaming and Rededication initiative. This effort reflects the City’s commitment to aligning public spaces with present-day community values by removing honors previously associated with Confederate figures and recognizing individuals whose contributions have positively shaped Alexandria.
The rededication is symbolic and does not require any changes to residents’ addresses, mailing information, voter registration, or official documents.
