E-Bike Update: Capital Bikeshare Pulls Electric Bikes Due to Brake Problems
ALEXANDRIA, VA —Capital Bikeshare, which now boasts over 500 stations and 4300 bikes in the Washington Metro area, has curbed its 200 electric bikes introduced last year,
The company issued a statement over the weekend which said, “we recently received a small number of reports from riders who experienced stronger than expected braking force on the front wheel. Out of an abundance of caution, we are proactively removing the electric bikes from service for the time being. We know this is disappointing to the many people who love the current experience — but reliability and safety come first.”
For now the electric bikes are being replaced with their standard pedal models, which riders can use for $2 for a single trip or $8 for unlimited rides in a single day. Monthly and yearly subscriptions are also available.
