Early Giving for Spring2ACTion, Alexandria is Open!

Alexandria's Spring to Action is April 15, but why wait until then? Early giving starts today! Make a donation to Freedom House to preserve our history.

Alexandria, VA –Spring2Action, Alexandria’s annual day of charitable giving, is April 15th.  Over the past 10 years of giving days, Historic Alexandria Museums have raised funds to support the restoration of Gadsby’s Tavern Museum‘s historic Ice Well, conservation of the first ship excavated from the Alexandria waterfront, restoration of the 1858 Hose Reel, and other important Alexandria artifacts and programs.

The Freedom House building at 1315 Duke St. was originally built around 1812 as a residence for General Robert Young, commander of Alexandria’s militia who died in 1824. This three-story brick building then became the headquarters for one of the largest slave traders in America. (File photo)

This year, they are raising money to support the preservation of the newest City of Alexandria museum – Freedom House. This National Historic Landmark, located at 1315 Duke Street, was “ground zero” for the domestic slave trade in the Chesapeake region. This year, your Spring2Action donation directly supports the creation of a Freedom House Preservation Fund. Currently, over 2 million dollars in funding is needed to preserve and restore this building. Historic Alexandria is committed to bearing witness to the complex history that occurred at this site. Expanding our understanding and interpretation of the domestic slave trade and its lasting impact on our community and nation starts with preservation of our most important object – the building!
