ALEXANDRIA, VA – Social distancing during the COVID-19 crisis means physical congregations are temporarily suspended, but streaming worship services are in place, reconnecting people and their spiritual leaders at places like Alfred Street Baptist Church and Beth El Hebrew Congregation in Alexandria and across the nation.

“Like many other churches, we have been livestreaming our worship services on Facebook for months now anyway,” says Trinity United Methodist Church parishioner Lucelle O’Flaherty. “But I’m glad we already had a system in place. It’s been a great tool for people who have been unable to attend church in person. Now more than ever.”

Most churches and temples are putting as much as they can online. “People can find their regular bible studies and prayer services online too,” says Alfred Street Baptist church elder Michele Chapman.

Even people who do not attend church or temple regularly are turning to religion these days looking for answers. “I am looking forward to Sunday services on my computer this weekend,” says Roger Harris, “I haven’t been to church since my dad died, but this virus has us all at a loss looking for answers.”
