Alexandria, VA – Volunteerism plays a significant role in amplifying community education and outreach, affecting policy decisions, and supporting philanthropic endeavors. Most important, it helps people in real time.

Top Five Reasons Respondents Began Volunteering

  1. It was an important part of my house of worship or spirituality.
  2. I experienced or witnessed an injustice or social issue firsthand and felt I needed to act.
  3. I learned about an issue in school, through the news, or from others and was inspired to act.
  4. People helped me or my family when I needed them, and I want to pay it forward.
  5. I was encouraged and given opportunities to give back throughout elementary, middle, and high school.

Helping others by volunteering can make you feel fulfilled and appreciated. You have experience and skills you know can help others. It’s a good way to stay active, have fun, and make friends while doing good.

If you can find yourself in any of these statements, it’s time to get started. Visit volunteeralexandria.org or alexandriava.gov/Volunteer to volunteer in Alexandria.

The program is a chance for students – grades 6 through 12 – to learn about their community’s issues and do something about it. Participants will engage with nonprofits, city agencies, and people from all walks of life as they earn service hours and explore career paths. “It really opened my eyes to the problems in Alexandria,” says a program attendee after her three-day experience.
