Offices, Eateries, and Recreation Are All Part of the Eisenhower Avenue Scene

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is a major employer.

Alexandria, VA – The Eisenhower Avenue corridor seems to have something for everyone, whether it’s the residents in the many condos and apartments or the workers that fill the offices, restaurants, and hotels. The just over five-mile road is bisected by Telegraph Road, forming an East Eisenhower and West Eisenhower. Both are full of amenities and conveniences, plus there are two Metro stations.

West Eisenhower extends from Van Dorn Street to Telegraph, which is the original stretch of Eisenhower Avenue centered around the Van Dorn Street Metro station on the Blue Line. The new high-rise Point at Eisenhower overlooks the avenue and features everything from 500sq.ft. studio apartments to 1500sq.ft. three-bedroom models with a pool on the roof and views of Old Town. “People like that it is modern but still feels homey,” said Kelsey Huppert, the leasing consultant there.

New construction is going up throughout the Eisenhower Avenue corridor.

Keller Williams agent Joe Mutebi has a four-bedroom, five-bath townhouse listed for $1.1 million in the Eisenhower Square community across the street. It has a garage, two master bedrooms, and a rooftop terrace. He describes it as “beautifully situated & tucked away in Alexandria city which allows you to escape the hustle & bustle of the city while still enjoying city living.”

The Point isn’t far from the Eisenhower Avenue Metro stop and the new Wegmans. Still, there is a shuttle on Eisenhower for rainy days when walking might be a problem.

Down on the west end, Lake Cook park has a waterslide and batting cage, and access to Van Dorn Street, which is a short hop to the beltway.

Scooters and bikes are popular modes of transportation on Eisenhower Avenue.

On the other end of Eisenhower Avenue, the Lost Boy Cider brewery has “Moose,” the Bernadoodle who takes on the role of the house dog. Lost Boy Cider was founded three years ago as an urban farm winery that makes “dry” cider, meaning sugar-free. Their ciders are unpasteurized, unfiltered, and made from ingredients grown in the Shenandoah Forest and Blue Ridge mountains. Lost Boy hosts upwards of 15 events each month, many of which are community gatherings.

Jill Falvo lives across the side street and rides her scooter everywhere because the Eisenhower corridor is conducive to scooter riding, except when she goes to Whole Foods and has to carry bags of groceries home. She is renting an Airbnb for a few weeks until her apartment is ready. “This area was the most attractive,” she said.

Turtles are a common sight at Lake Cook.

Near Lost Boy and the 0800 Carlyle condominiums, the Patent and Trademark Office dominates the streetscape. It is an employee magnet in that area. There are plenty of lunch places nearby, the Pool and Hot Tub Association, and lots of stuff named after John Carlyle, an Englishman well known in Alexandria.

Carlyle was a Founding Father who supported Virginia’s opposition to British taxation without representation. He married Sarah Fairfax and they had seven children. His son, George William Carlyle served under Henry “Light-Horse Harry” Lee and was killed at the Battle of Eutaw Springs on September 8, 1781, at age 15. John Carlyle died around 1780 and was buried at the Old Presbyterian Meeting House in Alexandria, next to his first wife and their children.

A plot of land reserved for the John Carlyle Center for Health and Wellness on the eastern end of Eisenhower Avenue is scheduled to open in 2024.
