Scholarship of Alexandria Founder and Chair of Alexandria School Board, Lou Cook, Dies at 89

ALEXANDRIA, VA – Marylou “Lou” Bernard Cook passed away at the Goodwin House in Alexandria, Virginia, on March 8, 2024.

The Honorable Lou Cook was a member of the Alexandria City School Board from 1977 to 1986, including three years as the Chair. She was also one of the founders of the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria. She was also a freelance writer for the Alexandria Gazette Packet and the Port Packet.
Lou Cook was preceded in death by her parents, Lyle & Kay Bernard, a sister Barbara Gregory and brother Billy Bernard, as well as her husband of 61 years, George Cook, who died in 2018.
Survivors include her four children: Katie Cook (Richard) of Arlington VA, Kelly Cook of Alexandria VA, Andy Cook (Lenore) of Alexandria and Will Cook (Beatriz) also of Alexandria. Seven grandchildren, and one great-grandson. She is also survived by her sister Betsy German (Wayne) and six nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held at Everly Wheatley Funeral Home, located at 1500 W. Braddock Rd, Alexandria, VA 22302. The visitation is scheduled for Monday, March 18, 2024, from 2 PM to 4 PM and again from 5 PM to 7 PM. On Tuesday, March 19, 2024, a Catholic Mass will be held at Our Lady Queen of Peace Roman Catholic Church located at 2700 19th St S, Arlington, VA 22204 at 11 AM.
