One Night Only: Mount Vernon Estate to Host Screening of ‘Chopin: The Space Concert’
ALEXANDRIA, VA – On Wednesday, Dec. 2, the beauty of Chopin‘s music and the majesty of space will unite. George Washington’s Mount Vernon will host a one-night-only screening of the 2012 film, “Chopin: The Space Concert,” which viewers can watch live from their homes. Accomplished pianist Tomasz Robak will provide the soundtrack to the film, playing some of Chopin’s most famous pieces alongside footage from NASA’s archives.
The free screening is part of the celebration to commemorate the great Polish composer’s birth 210 years ago.
Former astronaut Col. George D. Zamka, U.S. Marine Corps (Ret.), brought a Chopin CD aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour for a 2010 mission to install dome windows on the International Space Station. The experience of listening to the CD in space both served as a way to honor Zamka’s Polish ancestors and inspired the film.
Upon returning to Earth, Zamka, who will attend the concert as the guest of honor, called his friend and director, Adam Ustynowicz. That conversation sparked the creation of “Chopin: The Space Concert.”
