Alexandria Students Win C-SPAN Documentary Contest

ALEXANDRIA, VA-Five Alexandria students are winners in C-SPAN’s 2021 StudentCam competition. The national contest, in its 17th year, encourages middle and high school students to create short films on subjects of national importance.

T.C. Williams High School‘s Helen Russell, Alison Avelar, and Elena Gutierrez will receive $250 as honorable mention winners for the documentary, “Dear Mr. President: History, or Progress?” about the renaming of schools, statues, and monuments.

Browne Academy‘s Dava Arkoh will receive $250 as an honorable mention winner for the documentary, “Police Brutality and Racial Injustice in America.”

Browne Academy’s David Glover-Barr will receive $250 as an honorable mention winner for the documentary, “Climate Change, The Truth.”

The theme for this year was “Explore the issue you most want the president and new Congress to address in 2021.”

Despite facing challenges because of the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 2,300 students across the nation participated.

“We are so impressed by the resilience and ingenuity of this year’s prize-winning students who have delivered among the finest short films in the history of the StudentCam competition,”  said Craig McAndrew, Director, C-SPAN Education Relations.

The annual StudentCam competition is sponsored by the C-SPAN Education Foundation.
