ALEXANDRIA, VA – October is Energy Awareness Month. To do its part, the City of Alexandria is hosting Energy Efficiency Day locally on Oct. 6. Throughout the U.S., 884 governments, universities, corporations, and other establishments are taking part in the day.

According to its website, Energy Efficiency Day, first recognized in 2016, has a simple purpose: “Save Money. Cut Pollution. Create Jobs.”

Throughout the month residents and business owners are invited to visit the city’s Climate Change & Energy website. While online, learn more about programs and initiatives to improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the city’s buildings, vehicles, and operations.

The website also contains information about how to make homes and businesses energy efficient. For example,  learn about installing solar panels, get rebates for improving your home’s energy efficiency, and learn more about alternative transportation options designed to reduce each person’s carbon footprint.

City leaders are aware of “a global climate emergency and all levels of government and the public have a role to play in addressing climate change,” said a recent Alexandria eNews bulletin. They are working to update Alexandria’s Energy and Climate Change Action Plan. A meeting is scheduled for tonight at 7 p.m.

The plan supports the city’s response to climate change effects and environmental emergencies. It also follows Environmental Action Plan 2040, which addresses current measures for reducing greenhouse gasses and energy consumption, as well as actions that will positively effect climate change.
