ALEXANDRIA, VA- First Night Alexandria is a treasured tradition. Held on New Year’s Eve for 29 years, it is an alcohol-free celebration for the whole family. There is live music, food, art, and, of course, fireworks at midnight. This year, organizers will introduce new events.
For families who cannot stay out late, there will be twilight fireworks. This way the whole family can enjoy the show without missing bedtime. See them at 6 p.m. on Alexandria’s Waterfront. But don’t worry. This is simply an additional opportunity for families to enjoy fireworks. The midnight show is on as always.
Remember the Fun Hunt. It returns this year after a five-year absence. with new ways to enjoy Old Town Alexandria. A day of adventure and education could lead to prizes. The adventure will end at the Block Party in Market Square.
The Block Party takes place from 4 to 6 p.m. Enjoy live music, a “Cool Happy New Year” demonstration, and even more fun.

According to the First Night Alexandria website, similar celebrations take place around the world. The event’s beginning stemmed from civic-minded artists in Boston who sought to create an alternative to to traditional New Year’s Eve celebrations. For one night, places like coffee shops, stores, and other locations are transformed into performance venues.
