ALEXANDRIA, VA-Tim Beaty was the winner of the special election for Alexandria City School Board on Jan. 9. He fills the seat  vacated by Willie Bailey, who resigned suddenly Nov. 30. Beaty will serve until Dec. 31 of this year.

Earlier this evening (Jan. 18), Beaty attended his first official meeting with the School Board. Beforehand, he was welcomed by Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS). During his remarks, Beaty, who has worked in the labor movement, said he is “looking forward to bringing that experience to the division.”

“I’d like to thank my fellow Board members, the ACPS leadership team and the Alexandria community for entrusting me to support students and staff during my tenure,” he said.

Beaty will serve District A, alongside Board Chair Dr. Michelle Rief and Jacinta Greene. Since Alexandria consists of three voting districts, three members represent each district.

“We are excited to welcome Mr. Beaty to serve on our School Board,” Rief said. “Mr. Beaty has not only contributed directly to ACPS as a substitute teacher but the greater Alexandria community as well, volunteering and serving in various capacities throughout the city.”

All nine seats will be on the ballot in the Nov. 2024 election. This School Board was elected in Nov. 2021.

Its purpose is to adopt policy pertaining to the daily operation of schools within the ACPS system and ensure school laws are explained, followed, and enforced.
