Susan G. Komen Pink Walk for Breast Cancer Makes In-Person Return to DMV Region
WASHINGTON, DC–On Sunday Sept. 18, the 38th annual Susan G. Komen Pink Walk to support breast cancer research was held at Washington DC’s Freedom Plaza. The annual fundraiser is held in 40 cities nationwide, each with a fundraising goal. This year, the DMV saw 2,500 participants walk to raise funds towards the organization’s $600,000 goal.
This is the first year the walk has been held in person in the DMV since 2019. It was a virtual event during the pandemic. Walkers were eager to get out, raise awareness, and raise funds.
“Having a virtual option provided lots of people with the ability to participate in a safe way,” details Amanda DeBard, part of the Media Relations team for the walk.
“The pandemic has been hard on everyone, especially people diagnosed during and prior. A lot of people who were able to attend in person this year really felt that support and community. Being able to provide them with support, to let them know we are here for them… That is what Komen wants to provide.”
This year, the family-friendly walk began at Freedom Plaza in Washington DC (1301 Pennsylvania Ave), and made a 5 kilometer loop back to the start. “We are extremely grateful for those who participated and support Komen. It has been a tough couple of years for anyone diagnosed. There is a huge need right now [for those diagnosed] and Komen wants to be there for anyone who needs services.”
