Alexandria, VA – Spring2ACTion, Alexandria’s community-wide Giving Day, is planned for April 28, 2021.  This is a time when Alexandrians come together, uplift one another and support the organizations that serve our community in the best of times and during challenging times.  The fundraiser is an indispensable platform for local nonprofits to engage the community and raise critical funds.  April 28th is the 11th annual Spring2ACTion and the goal is to engage 10,000+ donors to raise $2.5 Million for the community we love.  Last year’s 10th annual online giving event was another record-breaker, generating $2.45 Million for 156 Alexandria nonprofits in just 24 hours, an increase of $386,455 over 2019.

Since its inception in 2011, Spring2ACTion has raised nearly $13 Million for local nonprofits.  Hosted by ACT for Alexandria, Spring2ACTion is the only city-wide giving day in the region designed to strengthen the impact of local nonprofits.  In addition to awarding $25,000 in prizes to the nonprofits raising the most dollars and most donors, ACT, Alexandria’s community foundation, will leverage additional dollars from Donor Advised Fund holders to provide hundreds of thousands of dollars in matching grants and gifts.

Many nonprofit organizations are continuing to see the increased needs brought on by the pandemic such as experiencing the hardship of pivoting programs, staff reduction and decreased funding.  There are so many incredible stories about the impact of this giving day.

Where does the money go?

Last year’s funds supported an emergency shelter, virtual and outdoor dance and movement classes, meals for families, supplies for virtual afterschool programming, blinking lights to keep pedestrians safe after dark, financial assistance for rent and utilities, online playgroups and parenting tips, health care and COVID testing, and much more.  Spring2ACTIon is an event where we can give back to the community we love, standing together in solidarity and generosity.  ACT is excited to share more of these stories in our partnership with the Zebra’s Z-TV and special programming in the weeks leading up to April 28.

“We are so proud to be part of such a generous community” says Heather Peeler, President and CEO of ACT for Alexandria. “Spring2ACTion is an opportunity for all Alexandrians to come together to support the nonprofits that are essential to our City.”

In 2020, all records were broken despite everyone being sheltered in place during the pandemic—donors got creative posting giving photos online like this couple did. (Photo: Spring2Action Facebook page)

How local businesses participate

The local business community is also playing a role in supporting Alexandria nonprofits in a big way.  Businesses will be participating in a Business Fundraiser mini competition, rallying their employees, clients and customers to give to organizations they love and discover new ones.  New this year will be a friendly competition between the Old Town Business Association and the Del Ray Business Association to see who can raise the most dollars and donors for Alexandria nonprofits.  Last year participating businesses raised $87,000 for nonprofit organizations.  Many others will support the day by offering food promotions and donating a percentage of sales to organizations.

Spring2ACTion is hosted by ACT for Alexandria, the community foundation.  Sponsors include:   City of Alexandria, Surviving Survivors Fund, Virginia Tech Innovation Campus, The Patterson Group TTR | Sotheby’s, Seward Group TTR | Sotheby’s, ESP Tea & Coffee, Burke & Herbert Bank, John Marshall Bank, Sikich, Verdence Capital Advisors, The Giving Girls Fund, and The Torpedo Factory Office Building.  ACT Annual Partners include:  Colonial Parking, McEnearney Associates, and Reingold.  Media Partners include:  Alexandria Living Magazine, Alexandria Times and the Zebra Press and its Z-TV Network.  Spring2ACTion is hosted on the GiveGab platform.
