ALEXANDRIA, VA – Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) students spend every day connected to technology and looking at computer screens to complete their studies. To give students a break from electronic devices, ACPS has offered free books this month.

At Patrick Henry, Principal Ingrid Bynum, Middle School Literacy Coach Kelly Miller, and other staff handed out books. Yesterday morning, T.C. Williams High School students were greeted by teachers with books as they arrived on campus.

We just really felt it was important for students to have books at home to read during the pandemic and to get physical books into the hands of students,” said Miller, who has delivered books to student homes. “It’s important to get away from screens for a while and curl up with a good book.”

The books given out both support the current curriculum and encourage reading for fun. They also reflect ACPS student diversity. Thanks to a $1,500 grant, each student selected three titles.

Candace Pannell, Library Media Instructional Specialist, helped organize the giveaway.

“We are trying to make e-books more accessible but there’s nothing like having a real book in your hands that you can make a physical connection with,” she said.
