Here’s Why Flags Are at Half-Staff in Virginia May 15

ALEXANDRIA, VA – Today (May 15) is Peace Officers Memorial Day. In recognition, Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) ordered all flags in the state flown at half-staff.

The full text of his order follows:

In accordance with the authority vested in me as Governor, I hereby order that the flags of the United States of America and the Commonwealth of Virginia be flown at half-staff on all state and local buildings and grounds in the Commonwealth of Virginia in memory and respect of Peace Officers’ Memorial Day.

I hereby order that the flags shall be lowered at sunrise on Monday, May 15, 2023 and remain at half-staff until sunset.

Ordered on this, the 14th day of May, 2023.

 

President John F. Kennedy, in 1962, proclaimed the first Peace Officers Memorial Day to honor the memory of those who have died in the line of duty. Every May 15, it marks the start of National Police Week, which honors the law enforcement community.
