Alexandria, VA – Senior Services of Alexandria (SSA) is hosting a virtual “Senior Living in Alexandria” workshop titled “Tracing Your Roots Through Genealogy” on Thursday, November 18, at 10 am via Zoom.

Genealogy is a popular topic for retired older adults who have time to learn about their family history. Researching family history has become a popular hobby, especially during the last couple of years when people have stayed close to home using the internet in various ways. Online research has made creating a family tree more accessible than ever before.

SSA is fortunate to have Stephen Hammond, a family historian in the Northern Virginia area, as speaker for the November 18 session. Mr. Hammond is a retired federal employee and a 7th generation member of the Syphax family of Washington, DC. He has participated in National Park Service programs at the Arlington House – the Robert E. Lee Memorial – to highlight the lives of the Syphax ancestors and other enslaved Americans on the estate. His goals are to educate and inspire others to research and document their family history.

This workshop promises to be an exciting and enlightening session about the Syphax family’s roots in our area and how you can start or enrich your family history research. It is a free Zoom session that is open to the public. To register, go to SSA’s website at www.seniorservicesalex.org or call 703-835-4414, ext. 110. You will receive the Zoom link the week of the workshop.
