National Breast Center Foundation Launches ‘Swing to Bust Cancer’ Fundraiser

Combined golf and tennis tourney to raise much-needed funds for cancer detection and prevention

Alexandria, VA – The National Breast Center Foundation (NBCF) is hosting a modified version of its annual fundraiser, a combined golf and tennis tournament at Belle Haven Country Club on Monday, August 31, 2020.

“The need for our services is greater than ever,” said Martha Carucci, executive director of the NBCF. “There are more than 300 women in the Latino community alone in Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia waiting for a mammogram right now. We just can’t keep them waiting and lose that vital advantage of early detection.”

The pandemic and resulting distancing requirements had caused the local nonprofit to postpone its annual golf tournament in May. The organization is moving forward with a revised version of its primary fundraiser in October, the Walk to Bust Cancer, creating a virtual event with some in-person features. Stay tuned for more details.

The Swing to Bust Cancer event in August will feature concurrent golf and tennis matches for players – two sports that lend themselves fairly well to prevailing Covid safety measures. The goal is to raise funds as well as awareness in the larger community. “We wanted to plan a fun, safe day for donors,” explained Carucci. “We’re sensitive to how tough things are for everyone these days. Now that Virginia is in Phase 3, the time feels right to move forward. There is such a high demand for our services, and all proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit women in need right here in our own community.”

This is the fifth year for the golf tournament, and the first time tennis is included. Golf will be played in a modified scramble format, and tennis players will compete in a modified round robin. The matches will be timed so that all players will be able to attend an outdoor, distanced reception at the conclusion of their respective matches.
