ALEXANDRIA, VA – The website, Art Is Fun, describes mixed media art as “a visual art form that combines a variety of media in a single artwork.” The example shared is artwork that includes both drawing and painting.

On September 10, an exhibition will open at The Art League Gallery that takes mixed media art to new heights. Artist Noah Williams‘ “Ancestral Callings” features ornate, four-foot tall masks, created from materials both man-made and natural.

“I’ve always had a love for masks,” said the artist, who was born and raised in Alexandria. “They connect me with my ancestors. I feel them communicating with me through these masks.”

The faces of Williams’ sculptures contain many expressions that range from fierce to sly. The faces are those of warriors and tricksters.

For one sculpture, “Shujaa,” he used real bull horns, which he found exciting. Williams is someone who pays attention to detail when creating his pieces.

When viewing the sculptures, he wants the audience to “feel their energy like it’s something they’ve never seen before. Something new.”

The Art League Gallery, located at 105 N. Union Street inside the Torpedo Factory Art Center, is open Wednesday to Sundays from 12-4 p.m. “Ancestral Callings” is on display until October 4. Visitors are asked to wear masks and maintain social distance. The gallery has a capacity limit of 10 people. Temperature checks will be performed at the door.
