New Members Join 8th Congressional District Democratic Committee
By Elisabeth Johnson PhD
Alexandria, VA – Alexandria Democrats elected four people to serve on the 8th Congressional District Democratic Committee. They also serve as members of the Central Committee of the Democratic Party of Virginia. The new members are David Lord, Elisabeth Palmer Johnson, Patrick Mulloy, and Holly Wallace. Johnson, Mulloy, and Wallace were incumbents.
Because of the pandemic, the 8th Congressional District Democratic Committee did not hold an in-person convention. Instead, the committee held a virtual convention analogous in format and voting procedure to the 2020 Democratic State Convention.
The convention convened at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 5. Each delegate was provided a unique identification number at registration; delegates and observers could view the convention on the Internet.
Senator Tim Kaine (D-Va) was the keynote speaker. Joining the convention during briefings about the Ukraine crisis, Senator Kaine said that it was important that he be at the convention because Alexandria had played a pivotal role in each of his statewide campaigns.
The Senator endeared himself to the convention when he said he considers himself an honorary Alexandrian. He spoke about current events and then rejoined the national briefings. Congressman Don Beyer (D-Va) and his challenger Victoria Virasingh also addressed the convention. Each spoke about their accomplishments and visions for the District if elected.
Online voting for Central Committee members occurred between 2:15 p.m., Saturday, March 5, and 7:15 p.m., Sunday, March 6. Shyam Raman, political director of the Democratic Party of Virginia, announced the election results on Monday, March 7.
The goal of the Democratic Party of Virginia is to encourage the full participation of all Virginians in choosing their elected officials and controlling their political destiny. The Democratic Party of Virginia is dedicated to preserving all the rights enumerated in Article One of the Constitution of Virginia.
Meronne Teklu is also representing Alexandria Democrats on the 8th Congressional District Committee. We are a lucky city!
