Del Ray’s Annual GardenFest Set for Sunday, April 27

The Ellen Pickering Award will be presented during the event

ALEXANDRIA, VA – Save the date for Del Ray’s annual GardenFest on Sunday, April 27 from noon to 4 p.m. The venue is the Nicholas A. Colasanto Baseball Field. It is located at intersection of Mount Vernon Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue, next to Mount Vernon Community School.

That day, a nominee will be presented with the Ellen Pickering Award in Enviornmental Excellence. The award is given every year by the City of Alexandria.

The Del Ray Citizens Association is hosting this free, educational, family-friendly outdoor festival. The group will distribute nearly 500 native tree seedlings and hundreds of vegetable and herb seed packets to attendees.

GardenFest will feature an on-site “Cider Garden” hosted by Lost Boy Cider, booths, kids’ activities, and interactive demonstrations about all kinds of gardening topics. Subjects will include composting, native plants, mushroom foraging, beekeeping, and vermiculture.

She is the founder and executive director of Heard, an Alexandria-based nonprofit that teaches life skills disguised as art to underserved populations.
