Help Kids Learn to Read: Alexandria Tutoring Consortium Needs Volunteers
Nonprofit losing volunteers due to Trump Adminstration order for federal employees to return to the office

ALEXANDRIA, VA-The Trump Administration has ordered federal workers to return to the office. That development means means that federal employees who have served as tutors with the Alexandria Tutoring Consortium will no longer be able to offer their time. The nonprofit ATC, which offers free tutoring during the school day to kids enrolled in ACPS, needs help as a result of the abrupt transition.
ATC leads a program called Book Buddies to teach kids how to read. Lisa Jacobs, ATC’s executive director, said that 275 kids are signed up for the program. “We want to make sure every one [of them] has a Book Buddy for the rest of the year,” she added.
“We have a fantastic group of tutors who are dedicated to their Book Buddies, as we call the kids,” explained Jacobs. “We are fortunate in our area to have so many citizens who are looking to engage with their community.”
Want to get involved? There are two ways to help: tutoring or donating. Volunteers work one-on-one with elementary school students They meet once or twice weekly for 30 to 45 minutes until May. ATC staff members provide training on how to conduct tutoring sessions and offer support. Sign up HERE. To donate, click HERE or contact Lisa Jacobs at [email protected].
This report has been updated to clarify that ATC offers tutoring during school, not after school.
