Zebra Book Club Dives Into Life of Desi Arnaz
Alexandria, VA – On the evening of Monday, September 29, members of the Zebra Book Club gathered at Havana 151-The Loft at Lena’s in Alexandria for an engaging discussion of Desi Arnaz: The Man Who Invented Television by Todd S. Purdum. This biography explores the remarkable career of the Cuban-American entertainer best known for co-starring in the iconic sitcom I Love Lucy.
The group, which gathers monthly at different restaurants in Alexandria, welcomed 14 members, along with Mary Wadland, Zebra’s founder, publisher, and editor. The conversation highlighted not only Arnaz’s role as Lucy’s on-screen partner but also his contributions as a visionary producer whose technical and business innovations transformed television.
Members were impressed by Arnaz’s substantial contributions to the television industry, particularly in pioneering the three-camera filming technique, syndication, and production ownership practices that remain standard today. “It’s amazing how many elements of television we take for granted originated with him,” remarked Susan Hahn, who led the discussion among the members.
The club will reconvene on Monday, October 27, at 7 pm at a location to be determined. They will discuss The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, continuing the book club’s tradition of blending lively conversation, great meals, and literary exploration.
Please follow the Zebra Book Club on Facebook for updates on the meeting’s location. If you don’t have a Facebook account, you can use the club’s Gmail account ([email protected]) to find the location and RSVP for October’s meeting.
