Alexandria, VA – In September, members of the Zebra Book Club met at Cheesetique in Del Ray for an engaging conversation about Kate Quinn’s “The Briar Club.” Set against the backdrop of the McCarthy-era Red Scare, the novel delves into secrets, shifting loyalties, and the complex lives of its female characters.

The discussion was led by longtime member Michelle Watters, who greeted both returning attendees and newcomers. The group examined how fear and paranoia during the Red Scare strained personal relationships, trust, and community.

The women at the heart of Quinn’s novel gave the group plenty to talk about. Quinn initially presents characters who appear easy to define. However, as their secrets emerge, those first impressions become far more complicated.

Beyond the literary discussion, the September gathering provided an opportunity for members to connect over food, camaraderie, and a mutual passion for storytelling.

Next up, the Zebra Book Club will read “The Borrowed Life of Frederick Fife” by Anna Johnston. The club will meet Oct. 26, with the location to be announced.

Readers can follow the Zebra Book Club on Facebook. Those without a Facebook account may  email [email protected]. Space is limited at meetings. The monthly book pick must be read in advance.
