New ‘Soul Food Saturdays’ Walking Tour in Alexandria Starts June 19

ALEXANDRIA, VA – Two family-run businesses are sharing a bite of American history through an innovative new Old Town walking tour series, Soul Food Saturdays.

Wisconsin-style custard shop, Goodies Frozen Custard & Treats, is collaborating with local tour operator, Historic America, to create a dynamic and interactive food experience that celebrates Black foodways in the United States.

“It was a perfect fit for us,” says Goodies founder Brandon Byrd, who recently opened the doors to his brick and mortar spot in the historic Ice House on Commerce Street in Old Town Alexandria.

Soul Food Saturdays launches June 19th, 2021 in celebration of Juneteenth, and will run every third Saturday through September. Each guided tour of Old Town Alexandria uses historic landmarks to highlight the invaluable contributions of African American culinary innovation and tradition to the creation of American cuisine. A multi-sensory experience, guests will see, hear, touch, smell and taste the story. The tours culminate with an inspired meal, served outdoors.

Historic America offers a full menu of multi-sensory neighborhood adventures, from national memorials to historic battlefields; this is their first culinary history tour. Tickets are available for immediate purchase.
