ALEXANDRIA, VA – Alexandria’s Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities earlier today gave city residents a sneak preview of summer programs in an eNews bulletin. The full list of programs and activities will be available Feb. 9; however, the bulletin indicates there will be a variety of week-long classes and camps. These include: Sports, Enrichment, Nature, Creative and Performing Arts, Technology, and Aquatics.

Registration will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 9 a.m. For nonresidents, registration starts on Friday, Feb. 25 at 9 a.m.

In addition to classes and programs, the Power-On Out of School Time Program (OSTP) Summer Camp will be offered at multiple rec centers and schools. It is designed for kids entering first through sixth grade by fall of this year.  In addition, a Power-Up OSTP Summer Camp will be offered at one location for youth entering sixth through tenth grades in the fall. The eight-week OSTP camps are open to residents only.  Priority will be given to families who qualify for financial assistance through a pre-registration process.

Pre-registration applicants are required to verify eligibility by completing a Pre-registration Eligibility Form between Monday, Feb. 7 and Saturday, Feb. 12. Beginning Feb. 7, the form will be available online. Printed forms will be available for pickup and drop-off at the following locations:

  • Lee Center Registration and Reservation Office, 1108 Jefferson St. (703.746.5414)
  • Charles Houston Recreation Center, 901 Wythe St. (703.746.5552)

Submitting the form by the deadline will place applicants in a computerized lottery, which selects applicants at random and creates a waitlist if necessary.

Once the pre-registration process is complete, any remaining openings will be filled using online-only registration. This begins Wednesday, Feb. 23, at 9 a.m. At the same time the following day, in-person and online registration for any remaining openings will be available.  In-person registration can be completed at any Alexandria rec center during program operating hours.

Note that all programs will follow current COVID-19 safety protocols for staff, participants, and facilities. Enrollment minimum and maximum varies by location based on facility size, health requirements, and current staffing levels.
