Alexandria, VA – The City of Alexandria’s Successful Aging Committee is pleased to announce that its annual Senior Health and Fitness Fair is back in person this year! The health and fitness fair is a regular event each May at the Lee Center, 108 Jefferson Street in Alexandria. This year it takes place on Thursday, May 19, from 10 am to 12 Noon.

May is Older Americans Month, designated by President John F. Kennedy in 1963 to honor older adults and celebrate their contribution to our communities. This year’s theme is “Age My Way,” and learning how to take care of your health and remain fit is the best way to do that.

The event kicks off with the Northern Virginia Falls Prevention Alliance talking about knowing your risks for falling. Did you know that falls are NOT a normal part of aging? Most falls are predictable and preventable. You will learn why preventing falls is so important, your risk factors for a fall, and what you can do to avoid falling.

A Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) exercise will be included, proving why building strength, endurance, balance, and overall fitness is essential for everyone! It will reduce your risk of a fall. We encourage participants to dress comfortably to take part in the program.

After this presentation, attendees can visit various breakout sessions that include healthy cooking demonstrations with the Chef of Goodwin House, exercises for older adults with the City’s Recreation Department’s older adult fitness guru Rodney Bates, an interactive fall prevention workshop, and blood pressure and glaucoma screenings. The event is free, but you must register at www.seniorservicesalex.org or call Senior Services of Alexandria’s office at 703-836-4414, ext. 110. We hope to see you at the Lee Center to jumpstart your Spring health and fitness routine.
