City of Alexandria to Host Building Safety Month Kickoff Event
ALEXANDRIA, VA-The City of Alexandria invites the public to its 12th annual Building Safety Month kickoff event on Friday, May 3 in Market Square (301 King St.).
This annual awareness month recognizes the importance of building safety and the code professionals who help keep the public safe. This year’s theme is “Mission Possible.”
Event highlights include a proclamation signing by Mayor Justin Wilson, remarks by City Manager James Parajon, and a keynote address by a special guest. City departments and building safety stakeholders will host exhibits and hold raffles for gift cards and home safety items such as tools and smoke detectors. Lunch will be provided. The event will also feature the following free training sessions:
- Life Safety 101, presented by Hilti
9-10 a.m., Alexandria City Hall, room 2000 (301 King St.) - Floodplain Design, Construction, and Impacts on Flood Insurance, presented by Floodproofing 11 a.m.-12 p.m., Alexandria City Hall, room 2000 (301 King St.)

Building Safety Month, sponsored by the International Code Council, is part of an international campaign to bring attention to building safety. It advocates for the modernization of building codes and public education around the development and maintenance of safe and sustainable structures.
The City’s code officials ensure the safety of vital public infrastructure and services, and protect residents from fires, weather-related events, and structural collapses.
