Visit Alexandria Says Portside Festival Cancelled, Cites Heat Emergency

ALEXANDRIA, VA-In an afternoon email, Visit Alexandria announced the cancellation of the Portisde in Old Town Summer Festival this Saturday “due to the heat emergency.” The decision was made in consultation with meteorologists and health professionals, The ALX Jazz Fest scheduled for tomorrow night (June 21) is still taking place. After consulting with meteorologists and emergency services experts, Visit Alexandria has made the decision to cancel the Portside in Old Town Summer Festival on Saturday, June 22, 2024, due to the heat emergency. Saturday’s heat index is forecast to exceed 100 degrees, with the weekend predicted to reach an “Extreme heat risk rating.” The safety of event attendees, participants, volunteers and staff is Visit Alexandria’s greatest priority. There are no plans to reschedule at this time.

ALX Jazz Fest @ Portside tomorrow (Friday), June 21, will proceed as planned from 6 to 9 p.m., with additional heat mitigation measures in progress, including an onsite cooling bus. Water is available across food vendors, and medical professionals will be on the premises.

Visitors and residents can head to Visit Alexandria’s event calendar to get inspired for future special events throughout the summer, including the 275th Alexandria and USA Birthday Celebration on July 13, 2024.
