A Peek at November Events at George Washington’s Mount Vernon

Alexandria, VA – Mount Vernon Tractor Rides November 1-5. A new event. Join Mount Vernon’s legendary Director of Horticulture and Livestock, Dean Norton, as he explores areas of the estate off public view, including the west gate. See where 18th-century roads once wove through the forest, learn about tree regeneration, and view where the animals live in their livestock facility away from the public eye.

Archeology Family Day on November 2-3. A unique opportunity for adults and children to learn about the archaeological process with a hands-on miniature dig, making clay replicas. Attendees also will receive a take-home craft kit and broken plate puzzle while supplies last.

Sensory-Friendly Family Morning on November 9. Neurodivergent individuals and families can join a sensory-friendly visit with a sensory bag (while supplies last), exploration of the historic area special self-guided tour, the Discovery Cart for hands-on lesson about the production of textiles.

Mount Vernon Salutes Veterans on November 11. In honor of America’s veterans, all active duty, former, and retired military personnel are offered free admission on Veterans Day. Veterans are invited to place a floral tribute at the Tomb, provided by the Daughters of the American Revolution. Visitors can enjoy a special patriotic music program, a history of Veterans Day, and a Q&A with Mount Vernon’s Resident Fifer.

George Washington’s mansion at Mount Vernon is undergoing major renovation. From November 1 through January 2025 the New Room, Servants’ Hall and Kitchen are open to the public. All other rooms are off view. The rest of the estate is open and offers a wide variety of events throughout the holiday season.
