Alexandria’s 2027 St. Patrick’s Day Parade Names Its Grand Marshal

Alexandria VA – Alexandria is already looking ahead to St. Patrick’s Day, and this year’s celebration will have a familiar face leading the way. The Ballyshaners have announced John Henneghan Pann, known around Old Town as John Pann, as the Grand Marshal of the 2027 Alexandria St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The 44th annual parade is scheduled for Saturday, March 6, 2027, at noon. For Pann, the honor brings together his Irish heritage, longtime connection to Alexandria and decades of involvement in community organizations.

From Irish Roots to Old Town

Pann’s parents came from County Clare and County Sligo, Ireland, and their heritage has remained an important part of his life. Although he was raised in Michigan and has lived and traveled in various parts of the world, Pann found a lasting home in Old Town Alexandria 21 years ago.

Over the years, he has become a familiar presence around King Street and throughout the local Irish community. Pann is one of the owners of John Crouch Tobacconist on King Street, which he purchased with business partner Dennis Polio five years ago. His Alexandria work history also includes time at O’Connell’s, TJ Stones, Shooter McGees, the Smoke Shop and other local establishments. The business partners also gave the shop a new identity, creating a logo in honor of Bella, a dog who regularly visited the store before passing away from breast cancer.

A Longtime Community Volunteer

Pann’s involvement extends well beyond his work in Old Town. He has been involved with the Fraternal Order of Eagles for 12 years and the Ancient Order of Hibernians for nine years. He has also been a longtime member of the Elks and served as an Exalted Ruler. His community spirit was on display last year when Pann joined Team O’Connell’s for the St. Baldrick’s fundraiser at Murphy’s. His head-shaving effort helped raise more than $6,000 for the cause.

Celebrating Irish Heritage in Alexandria

Irish music and the local Irish-American community remain important parts of Pann’s life. He says Alexandria’s strong sense of community reminds him of his Irish roots. Those who know him around town may recognize Pann riding his bicycle, offering a wave, a friendly hello or his familiar “Happy Friday!” He also has a passion for classic American cars and occasionally cruises around town in his 1984 El Camino.

Pann said he is honored to represent Alexandria’s Irish-American community as Grand Marshal and is humbled to receive the Grand Marshal sash.

Get Ready for the 2027 Parade

The Alexandria St. Patrick’s Day Parade traditionally takes place on the first Saturday in March and draws thousands of spectators and participants. The free celebration typically includes pipe bands, Irish dance schools, community organizations, performers and entertainment. Residents and visitors are encouraged to arrive early and consider public transportation. The King Street-Old Town Metro Station, served by the Blue and Yellow lines, is the closest Metro stop. Visitors can take the free King Street Trolley or walk approximately 10 minutes toward the parade activities.

The Ballyshaners were founded in 1980 by a group of volunteers who wanted to establish a St. Patrick’s Day parade in Old Town Alexandria. More than four decades later, the organization has expanded its mission to include promoting and preserving Irish history and culture.
