Alexandria Mayor Wilson and Others to Read During the Banned Books ‘Read-Out’ at the Athenaeum, September 25
Did you know that books are still being banned in the 21st century? Banned or challenged book titles include, Beloved by Toni Morrison, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee and the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. Each year the American Library Association (ALA) celebrates the right to read each September during Banned Books Week.
The Alexandria Library, in partnership with the Northern Virginia Fine Arts Association, is hosting its annual Banned Books Read-Out at the Athenaeum at 201 Prince Street on Wednesday September 25 from 7-9 pm.
You are invited to join Honorary Host Mayor Justin Wilson, Library Director Rose Dawson and others who will read from banned books to celebrate the freedom to read. You may read 3-5 minute selections from a banned or challenged book or just come to listen.
If you would like to read please RSVP with your selection to [email protected] by September 20.
The Intellectual Freedom Office of ALA records each year’s most banned or challenged books. For more information on Banned Books Week and to view a list of banned books go to: http://www.ala.org/advocacy/bbooks/
