Alexandria to Host 25th Annual Alexandria Earth Day Festival in Del Ray, April 28

Family Fun with Music, Live Demonstrations, Awards, Giveaways 

The City of Alexandria will host the 25th Annual Alexandria Earth Day and Arbor Day celebration on Saturday, April 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will be held at the Lenny Harris Memorial Fields at Braddock Park, 1005 Mount Vernon Ave., next to the George Washington Middle School. Admission is free, and food and beverages will be available for purchase.

This family-friendly event includes the eighth annual Upcycling Showcase, where students from Alexandria City Public Schools will present unique fashion items and other upcycling creations based on the event theme, “Local Action, Global Impact.”

Other activities include:

  • “Tent Talks,” featuring topics such as renewable energy, climate and health, preserving regional diversity through local conservation, bee conservation and updating the City’s Environmental Action Plan
  • The 10th annual Ellen Pickering Environmental Excellence Award presentation
  • Live demonstrations of composting, rainwater harvesting, and recycling
  • Live music by The Chromatics, a local a cappella group
  • More than 60 environmental exhibitors
  • Giveaways and vehicle displays
  • A GreenDrop truck accepting donations of used clothing

In keeping with the goals of the Eco-City Alexandria initiative, the purpose of Alexandria Earth Day is to promote environmental education, engage the public about Alexandria’s environmental issues and plans, and lead the community toward a green and sustainable future.

The public is encouraged to take public transit, walk or bike to the event. DASH will offer free rides to and from the event, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visit alexandriava.gov/EarthDay for a pass to ride DASH to the event. The pass can be printed or displayed via cellphone and shown to DASH drivers.

For the first time this year, bicyclists will have the opportunity to take one of five different Bike Trains (organized group rides) to the Earth Day event. Visit alexandriava.gov/EarthDay to sign up for a Bike Train.

  • Bicyclists may visit alexandriava.gov/GOAlex for the City’s Bikeways Map, which features Alexandria’s best on-street and off-road bikeways.
  • Parking is available in the George Washington Middle School parking lot, adjacent to the Lenny Harris Memorial Fields.

In case of inclement weather, the event will be relocated to George Washington Middle School, 1005 Mount Vernon Ave.
