ALEXANDRIA, VA – To help make sure all residents are counted, the City of Alexandria is looking for volunteers to help spread the word about the 2020 Census. The City’s Complete Count Committee is training community members to become Census Ambassadors, who will help residents learn what the questions will be on the Census; how the Census will take place; and how the Census benefits Alexandria.
In March, every U.S. household will receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census. The Census takes place every 10 years and counts every person living in the U.S. regardless of age, race, citizenship status or other demographics.
Counting Residents Important for Funding and Political Voice
Census data determines the number of seats each state gets in the U.S. House of Representatives and is used to allocate more than $675 billion in federal resources to state and local governments every year. The City uses the data to learn about its residents and how to serve the community equitably. Everyone living in the United States is entitled to representation and resources, regardless of how long they have lived here.
Training Sessions
Census Ambassador training is open to the public, and sessions are available at the following times:
- Thursday, February 13, 3:30-5:30 p.m.
Chinquapin Park Recreation Center and Aquatics Facility (3210 King St.) - Saturday, February 22, noon-2 p.m.
William Ramsay Recreation Center (5650 Sanger Ave.) - Sunday, March 15, 2-4 p.m.
Duncan Branch Library (2501 Commonwealth Ave.)
