ALEXANDRIA,VA-A significant fire broke out near the Van Dorn Metro Station on Saturday evening around 7: 30 p.m,, prompting a swift response from multiple fire and emergency crews in the Alexandria and Fairfax County area.

The blaze was first reported shortly after 7:30 p.m., with visible flames and thick plumes of dark and yellow smoke rising from the railway corridor just beyond the station, in the direction of Franconia. Eyewitnesses initially feared an explosion had occurred, but officials have not confirmed any detonation-related event at this time.

Units from Alexandria Fire Department, including Engine 210 and Engine 208, were first on the scene, arriving within minutes of the initial report. Due to the size and intensity of the fire, described by firefighters as “significant” and rapidly expanding, additional support was requested. Engine 206 and Engine 207, along with Battalion 202, responded to assist in containment.

Emergency personnel confirmed the fire’s location as 5609 Vine Street, on the Fairfax County side of the city boundary. Firefighters worked swiftly to control the flames, which had approached dangerously close to nearby rail tracks, prompting Metro officials to assess risks to passing trains. Service interruptions or delays have not yet been confirmed.

Drivers pulled over along Metro Road and surrounding areas as smoke engulfed the scene, creating hazardous visibility and prompting safety concerns for local residents. Structural damage was reported to at least one nearby building, though the extent of the damage remains under investigation.

Medic 207 was dispatched to the site, though it is currently unclear if there were any injuries related to the incident. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Officials are urging residents to avoid the area as the investigation and cleanup continue. More details will be released as they become available.
