International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD)

Promoting the participation of persons with disabilities and their leadership: taking action on the 2030 Development Agenda.

When we secure the rights of people with disabilities, we move closer to achieving the central promise of the 2030 Agenda – to leave no one behind.” Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary-GeneralToday, the United States International Council on Disabilities (USICD) celebrates the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) with their friends and colleagues around the world! USICD Board Members and several of IDPD members are attending the official UN opening and panel discussions in New York celebrating the day and IDPD will be holding their annual Gala this evening, Dec. 3, in Washington, DC.

The theme for this 2019 IDPD is: Promoting the participation of persons with disabilities and their leadership: taking action on the 2030 Development Agenda. The theme focuses on the empowerment of persons with disabilities for inclusive, equitable and sustainable development as envisaged in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which pledges to ‘leave no one behind’ and recognizes disability as a cross-cutting issues, to be considered in the implementation of its 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

IDPD is delighted that the UN will be holding a Spotlight Event titled Sport for all for Development and Peace as this evening USICD is honoring Sir Philip Craven, MBE with our distinguished International Advocate award. He is the former President of the International Paralympic Committee and a former Paralympic athlete.
