Did You Know? Virginia Tech Wants Two Storefronts at Potomac Yard

The 17,400 square foot property at 3601 Richmond Highway, was home for years to a Rack Room Shoes, and with the capability to expand to 30,000 feet.

Alexandria, VA- It’s no secret that Virginia Tech is making an impact in Alexandria with the development of its 15-acre campus at Potomac Yard. What you might not know is that early next month, the Alexandria Planning Commission will consider a proposal from Virginia Tech to operate a public school from two shuttered storefronts of the shopping center along Richmond Highway.

“[T]he Applicants want to establish a presence on the site by hosting academic programming and research labs as well as promoting the new district with a marketing center,” according the special use permit application with the City.

The 17,400 square foot property at 3601 Richmond Highway, was home for years to a Rack Room Shoes. Combined with the building next door, Virginia tech would have the flexibility to expand the facility to 30,000 square feet.

It will take about a decade for the campus to be completely built out to accommodate 750 students, but the first class will still be able to receive their master’s degrees in the fall of 2020 in existing office space next door to where the Virginia Tech buildings will be built.
