Alexandria, VA – At Patrick Henry Elementary School and Recreation Center, sustainability efforts are taking root in a very real way. A series of newly planted trees around the school’s parking lot are already making a difference by reducing the heat island effect that often comes with large paved areas.

Heat islands occur when concrete and asphalt surfaces absorb and hold heat, making nearby areas 10 to 20 degrees hotter than their surroundings. This can lead to more energy use, lower air quality, and uncomfortable conditions for students, staff, and visitors.

To address this, Patrick Henry implemented a greening initiative that included planting a variety of native trees along the parking lot perimeter and in medians between rows of parked cars. These trees not only provide much needed shade, but also help cool the surface temperature of the lot through a natural process called evapotranspiration.

Over the next few seasons, the benefits will become even more noticeable. Temperatures in shaded sections of the parking lot will be noticeably cooler, and the visual appeal of the area will continue to be improved.

The Alexandria Beautification Commission gave Patrick Henry Elementary School and Recreation Center a beautification award this year to celebrate their greener, more environmentally responsible campus. In addition to reducing heat, the trees contribute to improved air quality, stormwater management, and biodiversity.

By transforming a typical paved space into a more livable and sustainable area, Patrick Henry is proving that even small changes, like planting trees, can make a meaningful difference for the environment and for the community. We encourage other properties with big parking lots to plant more trees to help mitigate parking lot heat islands too!
