Alexandria City High School Honors Coach Mike Hughes for Three Decades of Leadership
Alexandria, VA – Alexandria City High School (formerly T.C. Williams) recently honored longtime coach Mike Hughes, celebrating more than three decades of leadership in the school’s cross country and track programs.
Hughes, who was named All-Metropolitan Coach of the Year in 2018, is widely respected for shaping not only winning athletes but also well-rounded young people. Among the many runners he has guided is Olympian Noah Lyles, who trained under Hughes before going on to international stardom.

Parents say Hughes’s impact reaches far beyond the track. Booster Club President Carrie Drummond, who has two children on the cross country team, praised his approach:
“Coach Hughes has always been so welcoming. He’s been a wonderful advocate for developing the whole runner—not just focusing on speed, but also emphasizing nutrition, sleep, and maintaining a healthy balance with school. As a parent, I’ve found it so reassuring to see him guiding athletes with that kind of perspective. He has truly set a great path for our kids, and we are so grateful.”
The celebration highlighted Hughes’s extraordinary career and the generations of Titans whose lives and achievements have been shaped by his dedication to the sport and to his students.
