Annual Mt. Vernon Bike Tour Offers Long & Short Versions

Riders last year gathered at The Workhouse in Lorton for the event.

Alexandria, VA – Join over 250 Mount Vernon area bicycle enthusiasts at District Supervisor Dan Storck’s 8th Annual Tour de Mount Vernon on Sunday, October 8. Choose either the long or short route. Both begin and end at George Washington’s Mount Vernon. And all will celebrate at the estate afterward with food, games, fun, music, beverages, and lawn games.

This year’s tour is dedicated to the late Dave Evans, a longtime Mount Vernon activist. Billed as a community bike ride, riders will bike on the closed George Washington Memorial Parkway along the Potomac River through the many Potomac Banks historical, ecological, and cultural sites, including River Farm, Gum Springs, the National Museum of the US Army, Woodlawn and Pope-Leighey House, Fort Hunt Park, Hollin Hills, and Dyke Marsh. There’s something of interest for everyone.

Participants who register early receive commemorative socks.

The route comprises paved roads and paved trails; it has some challenging sections. Ride monitors and Fairfax County Police will help with directions and keep everyone safe. Dedicated bikers opting for the long route will cover 40 miles. There is also a 24-mile ”Short Route.”

Registration ($35) is open until October 21 and includes Tour de Mount Vernon socks (while supplies last), one free day pass to George Washington’s Estate, one free day pass to Woodlawn and Pope-Leighey House, and a $5 donation to Fairfax Alliance for Better Bicycling.

The 2023 Tour is dedicated to Dave Evans.

Helmets are required with no exceptions. Check-in on ride day is from 7:00 to 7:50 am. Riders 15-17 must be accompanied by an adult. The event is rain or shine, but in case of extreme inclement weather, the ride will be postponed to Saturday, October 28, at 8:00 am. To register, go to mvonthemove.com and search “Tour de Mount Vernon 2023.” Or contact TEAM MVD at [email protected] or 703-780-7518 for more information.
