Virginia Tech Chooses Alexandria’s Potomac Yard For 15-Acre Innovation Campus

Virginia Tech Innovation Campus

Alexandria, VA – It’s official! Virginia Tech has chosen Alexandria’s Potomac Yard as home for its 15-acre Innovation Campus. Virginia Tech President Tim Sands made the announcement on Monday, and said that the project is a strategic win for the university by locating the campus next door to future neighbor Amazon, which is moving to Crystal City.

“Virginia Tech knows how to build community and support innovation and economic growth,” said Sen. Mark R. Warner (D-VA). “I’m confident that this campus will help meet the demands of our digital age and grow Virginia’s economy by fueling the jobs of tomorrow and creating a generation of high-skilled workers.”

Virginia Tech, which identified the property as the preferred location last fall, is partnering with Lionstone Investments. The campus is designed to be a part of the tech-talent pipeline package to attract new Master’s degree graduates to choose its HQ2 to be located in Crystal City. Additionally, the Potomac Yard Metro Station, which is in development, will be right next door to the campus.

“We’re extremely pleased to have this opportunity, in partnership with Lionstone, to establish the Innovation Campus in the heart of the National Landing technology district,” Sands said. “It is the ideal location to support Virginia Tech’s bold plan to develop new tech talent, disciplines, programs, and human-centered research that will shape the economic future of the commonwealth and beyond.”

It will take about a decade for the campus to be completely built out to accommodate 750 students, but the first class will still be able to receive their master’s degrees in the fall of 2020 in existing office space next door to where the Virginia Tech buildings will be built.

Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson said that Alexandria’s future has never been brighter.

“We are excited to deepen our partnership with Virginia Tech to bring to life a vibrant mixed-use district envisioned by our community through our local planning processes,” Wilson said. “The Innovation Campus will fuel Alexandria’s economic growth goals by attracting industry partners and driving business start-ups, and will complement the many tech-focused agencies and companies that already call our city and Northern Virginia home.”
