Step Inside History: The Twig Presents the 2025 Historic Alexandria Homes Tour

Alexandria, VA – This fall, doors will open to some of Old Town Alexandria’s most storied residences as The Twig, the Junior Auxiliary of Inova Alexandria Hospital, presents its 83rd Annual Historic Alexandria Homes Tour on Saturday, September 27. This beloved tradition, dating back to 1941, offers a rare opportunity to step inside private homes and experience the city’s rich architectural and cultural heritage—all while supporting an important community cause.

Since assuming stewardship of the Homes Tour in 1997, The Twig has elevated the event into one of Alexandria’s most anticipated traditions. Each year, guests are invited to wander through a carefully curated selection of private homes, admire thoughtful renovations, and discover the ways Old Town’s residents blend historic charm with modern living. Tour-goers will see everything from preserved 18th-century details to striking kitchen and garden transformations, each home reflecting the individuality of its owners.

“The Historic Homes Tour is more than just a chance to peek behind Alexandria’s iconic doors,” said Twig volunteer Scoti Albrecht. “It’s about experiencing living history—real families, real stories, and the ongoing evolution of our community’s treasured homes.”

The event is renowned for its element of surprise. In keeping with tradition, addresses of participating homes are not revealed until the morning of the tour, adding to the excitement and exclusivity of the experience. Past tours have featured residences once owned by freed slaves, former colonial-era businesses, and even the home of George Washington’s physician. Some houses showcase exquisite antique collections; others reveal imaginative, contemporary interiors that challenge expectations of historic spaces.

Behind the scenes, Twig volunteers dedicate months to ensuring a seamless experience for guests. Each home is staffed with trained docents who share stories, highlight unique features, and answer questions, transforming the event from a simple walk-through into an educational and engaging journey. Many homeowners themselves become so inspired by the experience that they later join The Twig, with some even rising to leadership roles in the organization.

Proceeds from the Historic Alexandria Homes Tour directly support Inova Alexandria Hospital, continuing The Twig’s longstanding mission to give back to the community. From operating the popular Twig Thrift Shop to organizing events like the Homes Tour, this all-volunteer nonprofit has raised millions to enhance patient care and services.
