Career Educator Vice Mayor Amy Jackson Looking for Student Intern for Spring 2022 in Alexandria, Virginia

ALEXANDRIA, VA – The Office of the Vice Mayor is currently accepting applications for the Spring 2022 Student Internship Program.

“As a career educator, and now in my role as Alexandria’s Vice Mayor, I am proud to be able to work with our youth in this capacity. Establishing this internship program in my office will allow our students to gain experience and understanding of our city government by researching relevant policy matters and engaging with our community – all with the insiders’ perspective,” Jackson said. “I look forward to our next generation being forward thinkers and change makers. It is a privilege to assist in the process.”

Student applicants awarded an internship into this program would be expected to participate a minimum of 10 hours a week for 11 weeks.

Dates for the Spring 2022 Student Internship Program are Monday, February 14 through Friday, May 6, 2022 in alignment with the City’s budget process (11 weeks and does not include the scheduled ACHS Spring Break).

Electronic applications must be submitted to The Office of the Vice Mayor at [email protected] and received by 8pm on Monday, January 31, 2022 to be considered for this internship program.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicants must be a junior or senior in high school
  • Applicants must be in good academic standing as of the 2nd quarter, with grades reflecting a 3.0 GPA or better
  • If awarded this internship, applicants must be able to commit to a minimum of 10 hours a week in program participation and assignments
  • Applicants will need to provide parental permission, references, and a personal written narrative (statement of interest) as part of the submission process
  • Applicants must have the ability to meet virtually or in-person as scheduled
  • Applicants should be vaccinated, boosted (if able), and wear masks due to the nature of public safety and in conjunction with the City’s emergency ordinance

Compensation and Benefits:

The Spring 2022 Student Internship Program within the Office of the Vice Mayor is an unpaid internship designed to provide relevant opportunities for engagement and experience in policy research and community outreach for high school students interested in pursuing government affairs in higher education.

  • Unpaid interns will not receive compensation for their internship
  • Interns are responsible for providing their own electronic technology, internet, and virtual interactive communication platforms (such as Zoom, etc) needed to complete their assignments
  • Interns are responsible for travel to and from their assignments
