Alexandria Fire Department Reminds Community that Fireworks are Dangerous and Illegal

Alexandria, VA – The Alexandria Fire Department reminds residents, businesses and visitors that it is illegal to possess, sell, store or use any fireworks — including sparklers — within city limits, even if they can be purchased legally in neighboring jurisdictions.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, thousands of people are injured while using consumer fireworks every Fourth of July; 26% of whom are younger than 15. Fireworks start an average of 18,500 fires per year in the United States, including 1,300 structure fires, 300 vehicle fires, and 16,900 outdoor and other fires. Every year, these fires cause an average of three deaths and 40 civilian injuries, and an average of $43 million in direct property damage.

Alexandria residents can enjoy the excitement and beauty of fireworks at City-sponsored events, such as the City Birthday celebration (this year on Saturday, July 13) or First Night Alexandria (every year on December 31).
