ALEXANDRIA, VA — Alexandria property owners now have a new way to protect themselves from one of the fastest-growing forms of real estate fraud in the country.
The Alexandria Circuit Court Clerk’s Office, led by Clerk Greg Parks, has launched VADeed Alert, a free online service that notifies property owners whenever a document is recorded against their property in the city’s land records.
The alert system is designed to help residents detect potential deed fraud, a crime in which scammers file fraudulent documents to transfer property ownership without the owner’s knowledge.
With VADeed Alert, property owners receive a notification if a document — such as a deed or other legal filing — is recorded under their name. The system provides an early warning so owners can quickly investigate if something unexpected appears.
“Deed fraud is on the rise across the country,” the clerk’s office said in announcing the program. “This tool gives property owners an extra layer of protection and peace of mind.”
How the System Works
Once registered, the system monitors Alexandria’s land records for filings associated with your name. If a document is recorded, you will receive a notification to review the filing and determine whether it is legitimate.
Officials say the service is free and easy to use, and signing up only takes a few minutes.
Why It Matters
Real estate fraud has become increasingly common in recent years, particularly in areas with high property values. Criminals may attempt to file fake deeds or other documents in land records to fraudulently claim ownership or secure loans against a property.
Early notification can help property owners respond quickly and prevent serious financial loss.
