Community Spirit on Full Display at The Twig’s Annual Historic Homes Tour
Fundraiser draws crowds, surprises—and an outpouring of generosity for Inova Alexandria Hospital
Alexandria, VA — Even with a 90% chance of rain looming, nothing could wash out the excitement surrounding The Twig’s Annual Historic Homes Tour, the popular fundraiser benefiting Inova Alexandria Hospital. Organized entirely by volunteers from The Twig, the hospital’s Junior Auxiliary, the event once again showcased Alexandria’s rich history, architectural charm, and unmatched community spirit.
This year’s tour offered guests a rare peek inside some of Old Town’s most remarkable private residences, including a first-ever stop at the historic Friendship Firehouse. Visitors strolled through the streets, guidebooks and wristbands in hand, marveling at elegant interiors and unexpected surprises “beyond the front door into a wonderland,” as one organizer put it.

Though the weather forecast threatened to derail one of the planned outdoor garden stops, the tour team pivoted quickly thanks to the extraordinary generosity of homeowner Elizabeth Neiner, who not only kept her home on the tour but later hosted 80 guests for an evening reception. Her hospitality quickly became the talk of the day — a perfect symbol of Alexandria’s neighborly spirit.
Distinguished guests included Inova Alexandria Hospital President Dr. Rina Bansal, IAH Foundation Board Vice Chair Donnie Wintermute, and Board of Lady Managers Co-Presidents Barbara Wells and Donita Greene, along with numerous Inova Visionaries, donors, and volunteers. Several Twig members currently serving on the Inova Alexandria Hospital Board were also in attendance.

As a thank-you, homeowners received custom exterior house portraits painted by local artist Seana Gallagher, marking her first year collaborating with the tour.
But beyond the beautiful homes and lively social moments, organizers say one message rang loudest: It’s all about the community.

“All proceeds go directly to Inova Alexandria,” said organizers. “This is the only day each year when every Twig volunteer comes together at once. Seeing hundreds of people walking Old Town for a shared cause is truly inspiring.”
Rain or shine, Alexandria showed up, and its generosity will continue to echo through the halls of its hometown hospital.
