Who controls your neighborhood’s future?

A look into the City’s plan for its Master Plan

Alexandria, VA – Agenda Alexandria plans to finish off the 2021-2022 program season by looking at how our neighborhoods’ development evolves. Even before the pandemic, our communities were quickly changing. Even as these changes happen, our city continues to be shaped based on a Master Plan that designates zoning codes throughout our neighborhoods.

However, recent developments, such as the mixed-use shopping/residential development on Mount Vernon Avenue, have raised the question of how the Master Plan aligns itself with the community’s changing needs. Commercial versus residential zoning – from being able to operate a business to the dynamics in high- and low-density residential areas – all come into play.

Who controls your neighborhood’s future? How does the City adapt to the needs of the community? How do modifications evolve, and how do developers adapt to these realities? How often should we be modifying our master plan? Please join us as we take a look through the eyes of different stakeholders at the evolution of Alexandria as competing priorities shape our city.

This program will take place on May 23 at the George Washington Masonic National Memorial. There is a small social reception at 6:30 pm, with the main program starting at 7:00 pm. The program will also be livestreamed through our social networks, collaborating with the Alexandria City High School Broadcast Club and The Zebra newspaper.
